Chitons are amazing mollusks you've never heard of. They are 400 million years old, have rocks for eyes (yes, they still work), and navigate using the earth's magnetic field with their iron-coated teeth.
Their unusual appearance and curious features make them one of my favorite specimens. I am often compelled to share their likeness with others. The wonder, awe, and strangeness of these little known ocean inhabitants seem to spark joy.
Using simple materials and bit of engineering I created this articulating chiton shell that could be worn like a backpack. It was a hit at the Halloween party, especially with the marine biologists!
Cardboard, acrylic paint, fabric, wooden dowels.
